Amarkantak is a famous pilgrimage town in Annupur district in Madhya Pradesh. Also known as Teerthraj (the king of pilgrimage), it is situated at an altitude of 1065mt at the meeting point of Vindhya and the Satpura mountain ranges. Amarkantak is a Sankrit word meaning immortal (amar) obstruction (kantak). It was the home of Gods but was disturbed by the obstacles of Rudraganas (soldiers of Rudra) and hence called Amarkantak.
Amarkant is blessed with holy ponds, verdant hills, forested surroundings and breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls. Dotted with countless ancient temples such as Kartikey temple, Shri Ram Janki temple and Annapurna temple, it is the major pilgrimage center for Hindus. Narmada Udgam Built around the origin point of the holy river Narmada, Narmada Udgam has a sacred reservoir made at the source of the river known as Narmadakund. It is one of the holiest points in Amrakantak. The sacred pool is surrounded with many temples dedicated to Hindu gods and goddesses such as Narmada and Shiva temple, Guru Gorakhnath temple, Sri Shuryanarayan temple, Vangeshwar Mahadev temple, Durga temple, Shiv Pariwar, Siddheswar Mahadev temple, Sri Radha Krishna temple and Eleven Rudra temple.
Sonmuda  It is the place of origin of river Sone. Situated at a distance of 1.5 km from Narmadakund, The River tumbles down as the silvery streams of water in to the deep jungles. According to Magesthanese, the river derived its name from the gold dust found in its water. The place also affords a panoramic sunrise view.
Mai ki Bagiya  Situated at a distance of one kilometer from Narmadakund is “Mai ki Bagiya” which is named in the honor of the goddess Narmada. This lovely garden is embellished with various fruit trees and flower plants. It is believed that Goddess Narmada used to pluck flowers in this garden.
Brighu Kamandal About three km from Amarkantak is Brighu Kamandal where one can see an ancient kamandal (water pitcher) which is always full of water. It is believed that Brighu Rishi meditated at this place.
Dhuni Pani  Bubbling midst the dense forest of Amarkantak are the natural hot springs “Dhuni Pani”. Regarded as Philosopher’s stone, the hot waters of the spring are believed to have curative powers.
Dugdhdhara Falling from the height of 50ft, the milky waters of Narmada gushes down through this beautiful waterfall “Dugdhdhara” creating foams as white as milk.
Kapildhara The roaring waterfall “Kapildhara” is situated about six kilometers away from Narmadakund. Cascading from the height of about hundred feet, the surrounding area is endowed with natural beauty. It is believed that Kapil Muni meditated here. According to “Vindhya Vaibhav”, he wrote Sankhya philosophy (an advanced treatise on mathematics) at this place. Just near to this fall is the Kapileshwar temple, dedicated to Kapil Muni. The area around the waterfall has been developed as an ideal picnic spot.            Excursions – Dindori (76kms)

By Rail: The closest railhead is Pendra Road (42 km.) on the Katni - Bilaspur section of the South-Eastern Railway.
By Road: Regular bus services connect Amarkantak with Shahdol, Umaria, Jabalpur, Rewa, Bilaspur, Anuppur and Pendra Road.
